Constance Jaeggi is a Swiss photographic artist based between London, UK and Fort Worth, TX. She moved to Texas from her native Switzerland in 2009 to pursue her degree from TCU and begin her competitive cutting horse-riding career. Constance has studied at the New York Film Academy and most recently completed a Master of Art History and Art World Practice at Christie’s in London.

Her work focuses on the relationship between horse and human, in particular women. She uses horses as a backdrop for exploring themes of intimacy and identity, connection and power dynamics. She is also a competitive cutting rider.

Her recent project, The Devils was short-listed for the 2021 Critical Mass Awards and is subject of a solo exhibition at the National Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth October 2021 – March 2022. This marks her second solo exhibition at the National Cowgirl Museum. In addition, her book on The Devils released in October 2021.

CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS

ESSENCE: Constance talks about goals, lists…she loves lists-lots of lists. She likes structure and realizes that sometimes she needs to impose that on herself. She speaks to the balance of both structure and spontaneity. Constance tells the backstory on how she came to find this passion of photographing horses. Initially her move to the U.S was to purse her cutting horse career. In following that goal, she was on the road a lot, traveling and spending so much time with the horses. Essentially, she discovered her passion for photography through the horses.

LOVE STORY: Constance reflects back on where her fascination for horses originated. Just as so many little girls, she was drawn to horses at a young age. Once her parents signed her up for riding lessons…that was it, she was hooked! Constance knew she wanted to make a life for herself centered around horses. She calls it says an enduring love story that she gets to live it daily. During the pandemic, she was over in the UK with stricter lockdown rules that here in Texas. Constance describes Meditative experience in creating The Devils project. Isolation, loneliness, connection and hope as her vision was to create an atmosphere in telling the story with her images. Constance wisely points out that throughout “periods of difficulty lead to tremendous growth”, a profound acknowledgement.

PROGRESS: Constance is a woman who is always learning, progressing forward and she says, “If I haven’t learned something today, I haven’t done my job”. As for her support system or where she finds support as a creative, Constance shares her motto of: just get out there and shoot. Get out there and just shoot images, similar to a write who gets writers bloc…just write, something, anything. In addition, Constance has great mentors and she has recently found that getting out of the comfort zone, giving herself little challenges led her to great opportunities. Constance had never pitched her work and over the last couple of years applied for portfolio reviews. She got a review from The Guardian, and it led to publication! Constance reflects on how during the lockdown, working on The Devils project was a turning point for her, for her career. The circumstances forced her utilize her environment to create work. Without a client base, in a new place…she gained a new perspective on her path and also the way she tells her stories through her images. Fine Art and storytelling have blended for her.
